The first training in Barcelona of the European project SDGsIY

Last November, the first face-to-face meeting of the Erasmus+ SDGsIY project took place in Barcelona. The aim of the reunion was to train young people interested in social networks who are potentially responsible for creating inclusive communication campaigns to raise awareness of SDG 13. The team in charge of the different pieces of training were young people with disabilities, who were able to speak first-hand about the essential elements that a digital campaign must have to be considered inclusive. It was possible to work on content previously researched at the meeting on climate change and disabilities.

The stay in Barcelona was organized by ECOM and was one of the actions of the European project co-financed by Erasmus+. It was also the first time that the partners from Italy, Felcos Umbria and Comune di Foligno, and from Spain, PREDIF and ECOM, worked face-to-face at the accessible facilities of l’Ajuntament de Barcelona, Torre Jussana.

All about the project “Sustainable Development Goals for the inclusion of young people with disabilities”

Did you know that people with disabilities are more vulnerable to climate change? Climate change is not negotiable, a matter for all of us, and impacts the rights of persons with disabilities. When it comes to the climate crisis, the rights and health of people with disabilities are not considered around the world. That’s why “Sustainable Development Goals for the inclusion of young people with disabilities” was created.

The project

Sustainable Development Goals for the inclusion of young people with disabilities is the European project, promoted by different organizations and financed by the European Commission Erasmus+ program, which wants to contribute to the creation of an appropriate environment to raise awareness among young people with and without disability on the environmental sustainability of the Sustainable Development Goals, promoting an active dialogue between young people in the European Union with and without disabilities.

SDGsIY (project acronym) intention is to provide youth workers with knowledge, skills and abilities to exploit digital tools to promote inclusive non-formal and informal education actions, itineraries and initiatives around GOAL 13 of the Sustainable Development Goals. This goal, number 13 of the SDGs, corresponds to action for the climate and taking urgent measures for climate change and its effects.

The project aims to raise the awareness of local communities about the importance of OBJECTIVE 13, inviting workers and youth organizations to adopt the results achieved. Another goal of the project is to raise awareness among young people and young people with disabilities about the importance of GOAL 13 exploiting social media campaigns.

Partners

The partners of the project are organizations that have proven experience in activities of this nature, especially in approaching young people to promote and work on awareness projects. The organizations are European, two located in Spain, ECOM and PREDIF, and two in Italy, FELCOS Umbria and Comune di Foligno. One of the keys to the project is the opportunity for partners to share ideas on how to create awareness of GOAL 13 and work with young people for a more inclusive perspective.

Target audience
SDGsIY aims to build active and aware citizens of the EU, enhancing at the same time an effective inclusion of people with disabilities, enabling young people to play an active role in the community and the environment at local, European and international levels. Its main target and beneficiaries are youth workers, young people with and without disabilities, youth associations, organizations that work on the topics of the SDGsIY and the general public. The proactivity and participation, with an open and horizontal approach, of all these people will be key to achieving different perspectives and contributions to all phases of the project.

Activities and social networks
The project’s activities will be developed throughout this next year. Among the planned actions will be: pieces of training, social media awareness campaigns and events to present the project and its results. Events will be hosted in Spain and Italy.

The social networks to follow the project are already active: Instagram and Facebook.  Follow SDGsIY to learn more about the project!
